LIMITED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE provided to prevent rent eviction, mortgage foreclosure or utility disconnection; may also assist with rent or utility deposit, where appropriate. First apply for assistance at the Nebraska Dept. of Health & Human Services, www.accessnebraska.ne.gov for an eligibility determination and referrals to community agencies with Letter of Eligibility, then schedule an appointment with Mid's Community Service Coordinator at 308-832-1829 or 308-865-5680 to apply for assistance.
THE CLOSET is a thrift store located at 341 E. 4th Street, Minden, 308-832-1221, open Mon-Fri 10 am-5 pm and Sat 10 am-3 pm; a redistribution center for gently-used clothing and small household goods; on-going bag sales; clothing vouchers available from Mid's Community Services Coordinator for those unable to leave a cash donation; no residence requirement to shop - everyone is welcome
FOOD PANTRY provides emergency food assistance, personal care items and diapers by appointment up to 4 times a year - only for Kearney County residents.
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT offers assistance for start-up and expansion of opportunities providing part time or full time employment. Services include research and assistance writing business plans; business loans in amounts of $100 to $5,000; individual and group pre-business training; and technical assistance for existing small business. WEATHERIZATION PROGRAM offers insulation, sealing of direct air penetrations and energy efficiency measures for renters (with landlord's signed approval) and owners of owner-occupied homes; income may be up to 150% of federal poverty guidelines (3 months income verification required with application). COMMODITY SUPPLEMENTAL FOOD PROGRAM for pregnant or postpartum women, children under the age of six years (150% of poverty level or Kids Connection eligible), and adults age 60 years and older (130% of poverty level), for a package of canned meats, fruits, vegetables and dry goods every other month. CHRISTMAS PROGRAM for Kearney County residents: Caring Tree enrollment is the last two weeks of October through the first week of December for children ages 14 and under - income eligibility up to 130%. CLOTHING ASSISTANCE is available for immediate needs and special consideration for children needing school clothing; vouchers which are redeemed at a Salvation Army Thrift Store, are limited to once every six months
RENT ASSISTANCE, January through November, is available for individuals with twelve month residency or more; must be employed or a student; must not be receiving public assistance or living in public housing; this assistance is a once in a lifetime help and consists of a portion of the total amount needed
DISASTER ASSISTANCE occurs after the American Red Cross has met the immediate crisis; partial replacement of destroyed belongings is offered; must provide paperwork showing assistance from American Red Cross
UTILITY ASSISTANCE for MUD (Metropolitan Utilities District) bills year round, for those over 60, disabled (proof of disability is required), and with special needs; must apply at Energy Assistance first; call the utility assistance phone number, listen to message for qualifications, leave name and number, and a Salvation Army employee will return the call
FAN PROGRAM June 1 - mid-September for people 50 and older, or who are disabled; clients can't receive a fan if they have received one in the past year unless it is broken, in which case they must return it to the Salvation Army for a new one
