DART offering free rides to COVID-19 vaccine appointments
The Des Moines Regional Transit Authority is offering free rides to COVID-19 vaccine appointments. According to a news release, the service is available on all local, express and on-call routes. DART Bus Plus riders can reserve a free ride to and from their vaccine appointments using the agency’s paratransit services, too. Those rides must be reserved at least 24 hours in advance by calling 515-283-8136. Riders will need to provide proof of their vaccine appointment. Once a rider knows where they need to go for a vaccine, they can use the MyDART Trip Planner on DART’s website or through the free MyDART app to learn which services they can use to get to their appointment. DART officials said face masks are required by federal law on all public transit vehicles and in public transit facilities. Disposable masks are available at the front of the bus for riders who don’t have one.
PARATRANSIT schedules and operate special transportation program for elderly and handicapped clients who have been certified as eligible for these services. For certification contact: Adult and Family Service Worker at nearest Polk County Department of Human Service Office.
**If anyone is needing a ride to the warming centers/homeless shelters due to the cold weather January 18, 2019-January 20, 2019 they must call 2-1-1 to set up a ride. Paratransit trips are door-to-door, operators are not allowed to enter someone’s home. Additionally, bus operators must be able to safely get the person from their home to the bus. Walks that are snow covered or icy may prevent an operator from getting to an individual. **
BUS PLUS offers transportation service provided by Paratransit that has no trip restrictions and the fare is determined on a zone basis. This is for anyone with a disability who is not eligible for subsidized transportation through Polk County or the State Department of Human Services may be eligible for Bus Plus. The service is available during regular Paratransit service hours.
